Brian’s Reflection: Tuesday, May 8, 2012

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be

And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

The Beatles. This album, “Let It Be”, was released
on this date, 1970, written by Paul McCartney

Imagine! Forty-two years ago! I was 24 years old … and it seems so vivid to me! I was a monk at the time, and was about to enter seminary, just 6 months after this song hit the charts. I loved the song then … and I still do. There was a brother who played the guitar and sang well, and he would sing this in a very moving way. Paul McCartney said that his mother had been the “inspiration” for the Mother Mary lyric. His mother died when Paul was 14. He had a dream about her, and late reported that she had said to him in the dream, “It will be all right; just let it be”.

Here is the song, sung by Beat Less: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoVc5zqwQNQ

So, Sir Paul’s mother visited him in a dream. To use a modern term, Paul’s mother was channeling. All mothers are icons … and there have been countless icons of “Mother Mary” throughout the ages. Here is a Hopi “Mother Mary” by John B Giuliani:

So. Who is Mother Mary?

Countless answers, of course. Here’s mine … at this moment and place:

She is God the Mother. She has been ruthlessly excluded from the Mystery of the Divine … especially by Judaism and by Christianity. But without The Mother, there would be no human race. Patriarchy has tried their best to eliminate The Mother, but they can’t. Not from the human race. And not from the Psyche. Not from the Universal Unconscious. Every single woman it an icon of Her. She will speak Her life-giving message of wisdom, of Life, no matter how furious the opposition. She speaks through every female. She speaks through the Feminine in every male. She speaks in the dream-world. She is always in front of us. She speaks in the Darkness. She speaks in the broken heart. She speaks in our parted-ness.

Men/males try to repress Her … especially in our World today. Popes, and Imams, and frightened men try to silence Her. But Mother Mary cannot be silenced. Even from behind the slit of the burka, She speaks.

Mother Mary gives Life. As Wisdom, She binds flesh and spirit. She gives birth to sisters and brothers of the eternal Word of God.

Hail Mother Mary! Hail all who have born Her image.

In our hour of darkness, come to us.
